Types of decomposition reaction
Decomposition reactions can be classified into three types:
1. Thermal decomposition reaction
Thermal decomposition is a chemical reaction where a single substance breaks into two or more simple substances when heated. The reaction is usually endothermic because heat is required to break the bonds present in the substance.
Thermal decomposition of calcium carbonate.
CaCO3 + Δ (Heating) → CaO + CO2
2. Electrolytic decomposition reaction
Electrolytic decomposition may result when electric current is passed through an aqueous solution of a compound.
Electrolysis of water
2H2O → 2H2 + O2
3. Photo decomposition reaction
The decomposition reaction resulting from action of light energy is called photolysis.
Photolysis of silver chloride
2AgCl → 2Ag + Cl2
