# linear equations in two variables

Let the two numbers be a and b.

Given a/b = 5/6

a = 5/6b -(i)

Now, subtracting 8 from each number, we will have two numbers as (a – 8) and (b – 8).

Given, (a – 8)/(b – 8) = 4/5

On solving,

5a – 40 = 4b – 32

5a – 4b = 8

Substituting value of a from eq(i), we get,

5(5/6)b – 4b = 8

25b – 24b = 48

b = 48

Now, a = (5/6)x48

a = 40

Hence, the two numbers are 40 and 48
