Acid bases and salts
Sodium hydroxide or Caustic Soda (NaOH) is mainly obtained in chloralkali process.
The balanced equation is as follows:
2NaCl (aq) + 2 H20 (l) -> 2NaOH (aq) + Cl2 (g) + H2 (g)
At the anode (A), chloride (Cl−) is oxidized to chlorine.
At the cathode (C), water is reduced to hydroxide and hydrogen gas.
